To refer to Doug Sica as a popular St. John bar owner or to say that he was well known
stretches the bounds of understatement. He was extremely well liked and became known to
literally millions of people, first as bartender of the legendary Back Yard in Cruz Bay and later
as one pair of skinny legs in the Coral Bay restaurant of that name. Dougie left us on March
21. He was 55 years old.

Doug moved to St. John in 1979 from Red Bank, New Jersey and quickly became part of the
community. The Back Yard, in those days, was more than a ginmill. It was the place to meet
and greet, an office for many and a melting pot of tourist, local and stateside transplant alike.
If you’d been there, Doug knew your name, where you were from and what’s your poison. He
could entertain the palefaces from the Midwest just as easily as he could silence the rowdy
drunks from the park. He seemed born to be behind the bar.

Doug was also a family man: a husband to Mary Pat, father to Rachael, Brian and Christopher
and adoring grandfather. Likewise, we, his St. John extended family will forever miss him.

They say that the deceased go to a better place, and we pray that is true. Sadly, the place
they leave is a little worse in exchange. Dougie leaves a void that will not be filled.
